During the current period of lockdown the Globe Theatre in London has been, like all theatres closed. This would not have been unusual occurance in Shakespeare’s day, where outbreaks of plague were frequent. Indeed the critieria for opening the theatres at the time was the number of death in the past week. Anything below 30 and things were fine. Of course social distancing was not in evidence, as upto 3000 people would crowd together, without benefit of toilets, to see Shakespeare’s latest offering. The present Globe has been placing some of their greatest hits on YouTube for our delight. A Midsummer Night’s Dream being one of the most popular and timely for this week is available now for a short period – do take a look if you want a really enjoyable evening.
