Today is extremely soggy in North Yorkshire. It has been raining for several hours and the prospect is that it will continue to drizzle for the rest of today and possibly tomorrow. So i thought why not share some songs about rain, after all it speaks into the Brisitah obsession with the weather. However I have taken a decison to exclude what might be described as ‘raining at the cricket’ musak and just go for some classic tunes. It seems to be a very popular topic for songwriters – so here we go!.
“Rainy Night in Georgia” is a song written by Tony Joe White in 1967 and popularized by Brook Benton in 1970. It came to my attention when Randy Crawford released a cover in 1981 as a part of her award winning album Secret Combination.

In the UK, it reached number 36. It was the group’s eighth gold-selling single.
“Purple Rain” is a song by American musician Prince and his backing band The Revoution. It is the title track from the 1984 album of the same name, which in turn is the soundtrack album for the 1984 film starring Prince, and was released as the third single from the album. “Purple Rain” reached No. 2 on the Billboard and stayed there for two weeks, being kept off the top spot by Wham. It reached No. 1 in Belgium and the Netherlands. It is certified Platinum and is considered to be one of Prince’s signature songs.
That will do for today but if the weather is the same tomorrow then we shall visit some more rain songs.
