Magda Andersson, Swedish singer-songwriter and singer with Ye Banished Privateers makes her international solo debut with her new alter ego Magda Novels. ‘Prologue’ was released on 29 March and will be followed by a release concert, with its very first live show in P60 Amstelveen on Thursday 6 April 2023.
‘Prologue’ is an EP with four tracks, in which Magda Andersson writes in English as her alter ego Magda Novels: “I look at Magda Novels as my dark side: a part of me that’s lurking but usually hidden from other people. When I write the songs, I try to let the subconscious come through, no matter how beautiful or ugly the thoughts are, without censoring or blocking. I want my lyrics to come from the part of the human mind that creates dreams, instincts, irrationality and abstraction.’
After many years of at least as many tours – mainly in Germany and the Netherlands – as a singer and guitarist in the pirate folk band Ye Banished Privateers, Magda is looking forward to exploring the encounter with an international audience on her own: “My music is inspired by artists like PJ Harvey , Patti Smith, First Aid Kit and Joni Mitchell. I would describe the sound as dark Americana with pop melodies and a rock ‘n’ roll attitude.”
A successful crowdfunding campaign in November, which raised €7,000 to help fund the EP, shows strong interest in the project. “It’s really cool that so many people believe in me so much that they want to contribute with their money and involvement, without even hearing the music. The crowdfunding campaign was not only about funding the EP, but also about gathering people to join me on this journey. “Prologue” is, as the title implies, just the beginning, where Magda Novels is headed, with live shows and upcoming releases, is an artistic challenge that gives me butterflies.”
Magda is an experienced live musician with thousands of shows under her belt. The audience can expect an enchanting atmosphere in which storytelling mixes with her captivating voice and the band’s dynamic americana/pop/rock sound.
