You know how you can be pottering through You Tube and suddenly you come across something that has been viewed over 10,000,000 times and yet had totally passed you by. Well that happened to me over the weekend. My recommendation page suggested that I watch ‘Abba – The Last Video’. Intrigued by the screen shot of the video, I did just that and discovered a little comedic gem. This video was apparently first shown during the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest, which is odd because it was set in Turkey not Sweden and won by the Ukraine. That being said it is delightful, particularly the way in which the script is almost entirely based on Abba lyrics. Oh yes, and watch out for the cameos.
There is also a ‘Making Of…’ video which shows just how the film was created which in itself is absolutely fascinating.
I suppose we should have a taste of the real thing, after all they could probably do with a plug. So having mentioned the Eurovision Song Contest what better than to reprise their winning 1974 performance, which first brought them to international attention.
Finally, Arguably their most popular and famous song, it is also one of the greatest disco tunes of all time. Agnetha Fältskog said of the song: “It’s often difficult to know what will be a hit. The exception was ‘Dancing Queen.’ We all knew it was going to be massive.” Benny Andersson agreed, calling it “one of those songs where you know during the sessions that it’s going to be a smash hit.” Bonus fact: It’s apparently the Queen’s favourite pop song ever. Honestly.
