“Foundations” is a song co-written by British singer-songwriter Kate Nash for her debut album, Made of Bricks (2007). It was released as the album’s lead single in June 2007, her first single since signing with Fiction Records. The music video was directed by Kinga Burza and makes use of video, still shots and stop motion animation. Colourful everyday items such as toothbrushes, shoes, socks and toys (one of which appears to be a Yellow Power Ranger) are prominent. It follows the song closely, and is made up of several main scenes; Nash playing a card game, turning in bed, eating lemons (“you’ve said I must eat so many lemons, because I am so bitter”), sitting on a staircase, arm wrestling, decorating a cake and sitting in her lounge, but is not happy living with her boyfriend. The video ends as she packs her suitcase and walks out of the house. The song spent five weeks at No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart.
“In the Shadows” is a song by Finnish band the Rasmus, included on the group’s fifth studio album Dead Lettersd. Released in 2003, the single achieved considerable chart success throughout Europe and Oceania, including the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 3, and New Zealand, where it topped the chart. There are four different music videos for the song: the Finnish (Bandit) version, the European (Crow) version, the American (Mirror) version, and a fourth, simplified version. In the video, directed by Philipp Stolzl in Bucharest, Romania, the band are performing a concert in what looks to be an old Victorian mansion. “In the Shadows” was nominated for the Kerrang! Award for Best Single in 2004.
“I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)” is the debut single of Scottish singer-songwriter Sandi Thom, released in October 2005. The song was written by Thom and Tom Gilbert. Following a re-release in 2006, the song topped the singles charts of Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Thom has said on her website that she wrote the song after being robbed of her mobile phone and other belongings one evening, leaving her completely lost and without any way of contacting her family, friends, or the bank. She says, “I wondered if that had happened to me back in the days of the hippies what would I have done and would I have freaked out so much?” [sic].
“Kiss Kiss” was covered by Australian actress Holly Valance and released it as her debut single in April 2002. Her version topped the charts of both Australia and the United Kingdom. The single debuted at number one in the United Kingdom in May 2002, selling 143,408 copies in its first week. The song made its debut on the Australian ARIA chart at number one. The official music video for Valance’s version features a compilation of Valance herself with a variety of different looks and sexualised outfits whilst performing the song. The video opens with a close-up of Valance’s lips, painted with a burnished red gloss, as she mimes a kiss at the viewer. Lightbulbs flash and pulse on a black background, gradually illuminating Valance’s apparently-naked figure, save for two bars of light across her chest and hips. Valance is next shown within a second black room, this time surrounded by blue rectangular strips of light. During the video, these lights change to red before returning to their original colour.
“Move Your Feet” is a song by Danish duo Junior Senior. The song, originally released in 2002 in the duo’s native Denmark, was issued worldwide in 2003 and became Junior Senior’s biggest hit, reaching No. 4 in Denmark, and No. 20 in Australia. The song proved to be successful in the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number three on the singles chart for two non-consecutive weeks, going on to become Britain’s 16th-best-selling single of 2003. A music video for the song, directed by British art collective Shynola, was created using low-resolution pixel art. The video features animated characters of the members of Junior Senior, dancing figures, and personified inanimate objects.
