The blog makes it’s return after a fortnight of enforced absence and to celebrate this we are going to spend the morning in November. Although November is nearly at an end, I though we should mark it’s passing with a collection of songs in which it’s virtues are praised.
“Rose Hip November” is a track from Just Another Diamond Day is the debut album by the English folk singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan, and was released in December 1970. Much of the album is a musical reflection on Bunyan and travelling partner Robert Lewis’s experiences while travelling by horse and wagon through Scotland in 1968. It highlighted Bunyan’s vocals with minimal instrumental accompaniment that was arranged by contemporary musical artists supervised under record producer Joe Boyd. Although it was largely overlooked by the public at the time of its release, the album’s critical standing has improved over the years and today Just Another Diamond Day is now by many considered one of the best works in British folk.
“Late November” is the first track from The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, the 1971 album by English singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. Built mostly around her own compositions, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is distinguished by its elusive lyrics and unexpected harmonies. Originally composed for the Fotheringay 2 sessions, “Late November”, inspired by a dream and the death of Fairport Convention band member Martin Lamble.
“November Rain” is a song by the American band Guns ‘N’ Roses. Written by the band’s lead vocalist Axl Rose, it was released as a single in 1992 from their third studio album, Use Your Illusion 1 (1991). “November Rain” peaked at number three on the United States Billboard chart, making it the longest song in history to enter the top ten of that chart at the time of its release. It is also the fourth longest song to enter the Hot 100 chart (second longest at the time of its release). The song reached number four in the UK, and the top 10 on several other music charts around the world.
“November” is a track from Memoryhouse the 2002 debut album by neo-classical or post minimalist composer Max Richter. Originally released under the Late Junction label, the album was reissued by FatCat Records in 2009 and 2014 with alternative album artwork. Memoryhouse received largely positive reviews from contemporary music critics. Pitchfork Media gave the album a very positive review in a retrospective review for the 2014 reissue on FatCat.
“November” is a track from English Rain the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin. It was released in May 2013 and serves as the follow-up to her 2012 EP, Home. It serves as her first release with a major record label, and was released with Parlophone. The album debuted at number two in the UK, selling over 35,000 copies. It has since been certified gold in the UK for selling 100,000 copies.
“November Tale” is a track from Modern Blues the eleventh studio album by The Waterboys, released on the independent label Harlequin and Clown in 2015. It was produced by Mike Scott, with two tracks being co-produced with Paul Brown. Modern Blues reached No. 14 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 2 on the UK Independent Albums Chart. Modern Blues was recorded in Nashville. “November Tale” was released as the first single from the album and a music video for the track was directed by Robert Jan Westdijk.
