Finally, we have arrived at the last of our series of post on numbers from 1-21. The series comes of age today and because this number has for many years been the age at which adulthood begins – at which one symbolically receives the ‘key of the door’, I asume that this right of passage will have been recorded in song. So to the research!
“21 Blues” is an an unreleased track by American songwriter and guitarist Chuck Berry. It is also known as ‘Vacation Time’ and was first recorded in 1958.
“Twenty One” is a track Desperado fromthe second studio album by the American band the Eagles. It was recorded at Island Studios in London, England, and released in 1973. The songs on Desperado are based on the themes of the Old West. Bernie Leadon wrote “Twenty-One” which refers to the age of Emmett Dalton, the youngest of the Dalton Gang, when he was shot 23 times but survived during the raid on Coffeyville Kansas, in October 1892.
“Twenty One” is a track from ‘No Need to Argue’ the second studio album by Irish alternative rock band the Cranberries in October 1994. It is the band’s best selling album, and has sold 17 million copies worldwide as of 2014. It contains the band’s most successful single, “Zombie”. The album’s mood is darker and harsher than that on their debut album released a year before.
“C’est la Vie (Always 21)” was the first new single released from Ace of Base’s first greatest hits album, Singles of the 90’s. It was produced by Jimmy James Ekgren, Sonny Peterson and Sigurd Rosnes of JPR Productions. It was released in Europe in October 1999. A planned UK release with additional remixes for 6 December was cancelled, but the remixes were finally released commercially in 2020. A music video was produced to promote the single.
“21 Guns” is a song by American band Green Day. It was released as the second single from their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown (2009), and serves as the sixteenth track from the album. The single was released in May 2009 as a digital download and July 2009 as a CD single. The song has been a commercial success on the Billboard chart, peaking at No. 22, becoming their highest charting single since 2005 and also their last top 40 hit in the United States.
“Freedom at 21” is a song by American musician Jack White from his debut solo album Blunderbuss (2012). Third Man Records distributed the single in April 2012 by releasing 1000 helium balloons attached to flexi-disc copies of the track. It was released for digital download and as a 7-inch vinyl single in June 2012, respectively, with the B-side “Inaccessible Mystery”. A music video directed by Hype Williams and starring Brittany Colombo was uploaded to White’s YouTube channel in July 2012.
