Frank and Frei was founded in April 2024 with the aim of making the unique and diverse world of sounds and the musical joy of life of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance audible again. Whenever possible, the people of the Middle Ages also indulged in the humour, joy and exuberance, which is expressed in numerous dances, drinking, mood and love songs, which in turn is reflected in the musical repertoire of the Viennese ensemble. Monika Fink, Ingrid Wagner-Kraft and Bernhard Winkler play a wide range historical instruments, which they use extensively.
The name Frank And Frei (in German Frank Und Frei) takes its origin from the writings of Goethe in 1832. In the second part of his book ‘The Tragedy of Faust’ he writes:
“Say today nothing against me!
Feel me so frank and free;
Fresh air and cheerful songs
I myself bring them.
