Dublin is the capital and largest city of Ireland. On a bay at the mouth of the River Liffey, it is in the province of Leinster, bordered on the south by the Dublin Mountains, a part of the Wicklow Mountains range. Dublin is a centre for education, arts and culture, administration, and industry. As of 2018, the city was listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network as a global city, with a ranking of “Alpha minus”, which places it as one of the top thirty cities in the world.
“Rocky Road to Dublin” is a 19th-century Irish song written by Irish poet D. K. Gavan about a man’s experiences as he travels to Liverpool, England from his home in Tuam, Ireland. Originally popularized by Harry Clifton, it has since been performed extensively and become a standard of Irish folk music. The song is also often performed instrumentally. The song describes the adventures, troubles, and travails that the protagonist encounters on his travels. At the beginning of the song, the protagonist of the story states that he is “off to reap the corn” meaning he is off to seek his fortune.
“Dublin” is a song by Thin Lizzy Although Thin Lizzy are remembered principally as a hard rock/heavy metal band with a unique twin lead guitar sound, front man and songwriter Phil Lynott had a softer side. This slow, sentimental song begins with an arpeggiated acoustic guitar augmented with some very subdued electric guitar from Eric Bell. It appears to have been recorded for the band’s eponymous debut album in a session which began in January 1971. Running to a mere 2:27, “Dublin” is intensely personal in parts and partly a tribute to Phil Lynott’s hometown. Although he was born near Birmingham and spent his formative years between Manchester and Dublin, there was never any doubt that Lynott regarded himself as an Irishman through and through.
“Summer in Dublin”, is the best known song by Bagatelle who were an Irish rock band that first formed in August 1978. They are known for their popular pop hits such as “Second Violin”, “Leeson Street Lady”. The band formed in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. Fellow Irish musician Bono commented on the impact that Bagatelle had on U2 in the early days of their career. Larry Mullen, of the same band, once famously said that he used to call them “Baga-Money”, in reference to their fame, and that he wished that his band could be as successful as Bagatelle.
“Dublin Town” is a song by singer-songwriter and Ballyfermot Rock School graduate Damien Dempsey. It is a song about poverty and unemployment in Dublin and became one of the tracks on his 2000 debut album ‘They Don’t Teach This Shit in School’. This song is inspired by what you would call the non-tourist side of Dublin, the non-Eurovision song contest end of Dublin.
“Dublin” is a song by Prefab Sprout taken from their fourth studio album Protest Songs released in 1989. Dublin which features only McAloon accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, is about the Troubles. McAloon maintained in several interviews that Steve McQueen would have been improved had “Dublin” been included on it, saying; “We could have had the ultimate killer album, a record beyond all other records”.
