Athens

In the classical period, Athens was a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum, Athens was also the birthplace of Socrates, Plato, Pericles, Aristophanes, Sophocles, and many other prominent philosophers, writers and politicians of the ancient world. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western Civilization, and the birthplace of democracy.

“Athens” Elva is a new venture from Elizabeth Morris of English indie-pop greats Allo Darlin’ and Ola Innset of Norwegian bands Making Marks and Sunturns. Today, we’re premiering their first song and video for “Athens.” The widely adored Allo Darlin’ broke up in 2016. Compared to that band’s last release, “Hymn On The 45,” which felt like a celebration of new opportunities and directions, “Athens” is on the quiet side. The track takes a much more rustically sensible approach, grounded in heavenly acoustic plucks and light percussion. While still proving a complete mastery of melodic tone, there seems to be a newfound lightness in the air. The accompanying video for “Athens,” shot by greek filmmakers Ilektra Poirazoglou and Iason Arvanitakis, reflects this almost folky pragmatism. The black and white shots are of a bustling urban center, capturing the curious facets of adventuring into something new. Also, there are a lot of dogs.

“The White Rose of Athens” was the song by which Nana Mouskouri became well known throughout Europe. It was recorded first in German as “Weiße Rosen aus Athen” as an adaptation of her Greek song “Σαν σφυρίξεις τρείς φορές” (San sfyríxeis tris forés, “When you whistle three times”). It became her first record to sell over one million copies. The song was originally adapted by Hadjidakis from a folk melody.

“Raining in Athens” is a track by Azure Ray from their ‘Burn and Shiver’ album released in 2002. It is Azure Ray’s latest collection of unexcitable meditations on lost love. Raining in Athens is the stellar track on the album. The thing about Azure Ray is that it’s not just music box-like in sound, but also in its actual execution. It’s structured so tightly, every piece and sound and texture exactly where it needs to be, not a hair out of place. It’s so full of detail, and yet it feels effortless.

“Mi Ultimo Tango en Atenas” (My Last Tango in Athens) The APURIMAC along with Elli Paspala, sing my last Tango in Athens. Going for a song with the following originality: while it is written in the Spanish language, the creator of Daniel Armando (Argentine in origin and with experience of crises and bankruptcy) uses 100 Greek words given in Spanish, describing with very strong images all reality we live nowadays. And because our last Tango? Because if you don’t wake up and not act like people directly, then there won’t be another chance to sing and dance a tango yet …

“Athina” is a Greek song dedicated to the beautiful capital of Greece, Athens and performed by Nana Mouskouri. This song is love for Athina, “joy of the Earth and dawn”, epicenter of ancient times and myths, “heaven’s garden”…It’s a pearl you carry forever in your soul and finally so that one day “one night on the beach” actually, you will become its seashell; to keep its name, its spirit, its timelessness and glory, all love it has been giving you…and love you learned and found inside the “small azure lily”.
