Animal Songs – Camels 1

We move now to those ‘Ships of the Desert’ the humble ‘Camel’ both Dromedary and Bactrian.

“Behind My Camel” is the eighth track from the 1980 album ‘Zenyatta Mondatta’ by the British band The Police. The song was written by guitarist Andy Summers and was the first one to be composed solely by him during his career in The Police. It won the Grammy Award of 1982 (awarded in 1982, but for accomplishments in late 1980 or 1981) for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song features a simple, yet eerie guitar melody, which is quasi-Arabic in style (hence the title), a repetitive bass riff played by Summers himself because of Sting opting out, drums played by Stewart Copeland, and atmospheric keyboards rather deep in the mix.

“Camel Ride” is a track from ‘That’s the Way It Should Be‘ an album by Boooker T. & the M.G.’s, their first since Universal Language, released in 1977. The track “Cruisin'” won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The track was written by Steve Cropper, Booker T. Jones and Steve Jordan. The album features drummer Steve Jordan on 9 of the albums tracks whilst James Gadson played on 3 of the tracks. It is also the final album to feature bassist Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn before his death in 2012 and also the most recent album the band has released and is also the final studio album they’ve released since going their separate ways in 2012 following Dunn’s death.

“Camel Ride” is a track from the 3rd album ‘Mission Exotica’ by the Langhorns an instrumental surf music band from Lund, Sweden. The members are Michael Sellers – guitar (Sellars was previously in Swedish band The Sinners) Martin Berglund – bass Rikard Swardh – drums Erik Wesser – organ. The band is strongly influenced by surf music and Latin music. Some of their music has been used on Nickelodeon’s cartoon Spongebob Squarepants and on the TV series Sex and the City. They are also featured in the Swedish horror film Frostbiten.

“Camel Stomp” is an instrumental by Christopher Norton, composer of the popular Microjazz series. He has written 21 witty and playable improvisations on famous tunes. American tunes, Christmas carols and nursery rhymes are given the inimitable Norton treatment. Camel Stomp from the Concert Collection for piano album released in 2003. This particular songs is an arrangement of the tune for the carol ‘ We Three Kings”.

“Camel Walk” is a song by Phish an American rock band formed in Burlington, Vermont, in 1983. The band is known for musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of genres, and a dedicated fan base. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, all of whom perform vocals, with Anastasio being the lead vocalist. Camel Walk appears on ‘Phish: Live in Vegas’ (2000) a video of a complete live performance recorded at the Thomas & Mack Centre in September 2000, bandleader Trey Anastasio’s 36th birthday.
