Barbieri began her classical guitar studies at the age of 11 and in 2012 she graduated from the GB Martini Conservatory in Bologna. After a period of Erasmus studies at the College of Music and Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, she graduated in 2014 in electro-acoustic composition. In 2015 she graduated in Modern Literature at the University of Bologna. Since 2013 she has been attending the Elektronmusikstudion electronic music studios in Stockholm, where she started working with the Buchla 200 analog modular system and, after having released a split album named Morbida with Medicine Bow (2014), she produced her solo debut Vertical for Buchla 200 synthesizer and voice, which was released in 2014 by Cassauna, a sub-label of the US Important Records.
Vertical explores different concepts of psycho-acoustics, synthesis and repetition by blending minimalist, drone and techno . The album is called a “meditation on primary waveforms and the polyrhythmic dance of harmonics in synthetic sounds”. Vertical has received positive feedback from magazines such as Ad Hoc , in which it is claimed that it shows its full potential present in every single tone – as well as the movement of a piece as part of a whole – to envelop the listener in a magnetic experience where little importance is given to the linear dimension of time “.
In 2017, she released a double vinyl second album Patterns of Consciousness , composed through the exclusive use of the four-track sequencer ER-101 and a harmonic oscillator. According to the artist’s intentions, the album “would explore the psycho-physical effects of sound on consciousness through the ideally infinite repetition and permutation of patterns”. At the time of its release, Patterns of Consciousness was considered one of the best publications of the year by various magazines including The Wire, and Vice. In the same year she released Remote Sensing , a collaboration with Carlo Maria Punctum.
In 2018 Born Again in the Voltage was released , an album consisting of four tracks for Buchla 200, voice and cello recorded at the Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm between 2014 and 2015. This release received positive reviews from magazines such as Pitchfork. Shortly after Born Again in the Voltage , the split album with Eleh Wear Patterns is released. In 2019, she released Editions Mego Ecstatic Computation which received excellent reviews from international critics. Brainwashed called the album the “work of a hyper-intelligent android who discovered human emotions and feels them very intensely”, while Rolling Stone Italia included Ecstatic Computation among the best Italian records of the decade.
Barbieri was in 2018 an artist of the European SHAPE circuit and in 2019 she was part of the We Are Europe network. In 2019 she joined the Warp Publishing roster and Aphex Twin invited her to open at her London show at Printworks. Vice magazine included her among the most influential Italian artists of the decade. During the month of April 2021 Fantas Variations was released, containing reinterpretations of the song Fantas contained in Ecstatic Computation.
