Well for some the songs for Saturday proved an embarassment of riches, for others just an embarassment! What do you think?

Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” is a song originally recorded by Elton John. John composed it with his long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. It was released on John’s best-selling album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) and as the first single. The song is one of John’s most critically and commercially successful singles, a No. 7 hit record in the United Kingdom. It has been covered by many artists and featured on motion picture, video game, and television soundtracks. The lyrics discuss a night out in town in which the narrator plans to “get about as oiled as a diesel train”. Taupin has said that the song was meant to be an American rock and roll song set in Britain. It was inspired by his raucous teenage days and in particular, the fistfights in his local pub, the Aston Arms in Market Rasen.

Saturday Night” is a song by Whigfield which was performed by Danish-born Sannie Charlotte Carlson. It was first released in 1992 in Italy. In 1994, it was released in the rest of Europe and experienced worldwide success. The single went straight to number one on the UK Singles Chart. The song also reached number one in Germany, Ireland, Spain and Switzerland, and it became a top-10 hit in Austria, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. Outside Europe, the song peaked at number 3 in Zimbabwe, number 19 on the US Billboard chart and number 78 in Australia (in 1997).

Another Saturday Night” is the title of a 1963 hit single by Sam Cooke from the album Ain’t That Good News. The song was written by Cooke while touring in England when staying in a hotel room where no female guests were allowed. It reached No. 10 on the Billboard and was No. 1 on the R&B chart for a single week. In the UK, the song peaked at No. 23 on the Uk Singles Chart. Cooke’s version featured his spoken recitation, which is done during the instrumental break, wishing that he had two girls on his arm.

Son Dam-bi is a South Korean singer, actress and entertainer. She began her career as a solo singer in 2007. She also made her acting debut in the 2009 drama Dream. Son released an EP with the single “Toyoil Bamae” (“On a Saturday Night”). The song became her first #1 hit, topping various on and offline charts, including M! Countdown (within 20 days), two wins on KBS’ Music Bank, and a three-week chart-topping run on SBS Inkigayo. The songs’ routine features Son in various 80’s fashions, transforming her into a “retro fashionista”.

Saturday Night at the Movies is a song written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and recorded by The Drifters from the United States with Johnny Moore as vocalist, released as a 1964 single, peaking at #18th position at the Billboard. The song eventually charted in the United Kingdom in March 1972 when reissued as a double A-side with “At The Club” peaking at #3 at the UK Singles Chart. This version appears to have been performed on the Saturday Night show 321 with Ted Rogers.

Perhaps we should end this post with a change of pace. “10:15 Saturday Night” is a song by The Cure. It was the B-side to their single “Killing An Arab” as well as the opening track of their debut album Three Imaginary Boys. It was also released in France as a single, with the track “Accuracy” as the B-side. It has been performed live during most of their shows since its release, and was included in their live album Concert. he track was written by Robert Smith at the age of 16 one evening while sitting at the kitchen table feeling “utterly morose” watching the tap dripping and drinking his dad’s homemade beer.
