The Magpies – Old Joe

One of the last gigs that katy and I attended prior to the the lockdown, was at Cecil Sharp House in Bristol last February. We had the great pleasure of seeing The Magpies in concert, at the start of their Album Launch Tour. As expected they were brilliant and we left with their tunes ringing in our ears and a signed copy of their album ‘Tidings’ in our hands. It has been much listened to since. The reviews for it have been excellent with Uncut describing them as a ‘minor supergroup of sorts’.

I have to declare an interest here, having known Bella for many years on the folk circuit in Bradford – indeed she performed at my 60th birthday party and Live @ Costa. She and Polly have played Live at St. C’s in Wrose. It is good news that they have now morphed into the Magpies by the addition of Holly on violin and Sarah on cello.

There is nothing better on a grey Monday morning than something foot-tapping to get the blood pumping. So here is another offering – the quaintly titled ‘Balls to the Wall’ with which they close the album.
